Falconry returns to Northumberland County Show

Falconry returns to Northumberland County Show

A team from Falconry Days will be showing off 20 different species, ranging from a turkey vulture to barn owls, as well as putting on a display of their flying skills.

Husband and wife team Mark and Mandy French run the company which is based near Simonburn. Them and five other falconers have been practising for the event since early March.

Mr French,  said: "The main arena is a fantastic opportunity for the birds to fly at breakneck speeds and demonstrate their agility."

The birds are trained to respond to a lure in response to the falconer's call. They will also take part in routines using toy rabbits, and will be fitted with tiny tracking devices for their own safety.

Mr French said: "Shows are excellent marketing opportunities for us to build awareness and educate everyone about raptors.

They have a wide variety of experience days, from relatively simple half-day family handling sessions to more specialised hunting days, one-to-one courses for would-be falconers and even raptor photography days.

Northumberland County Show will be held at Tynedale Park in Corbridge on Bank Holiday Monday, May 31.
