Northumberland families wait for election results

Families in Northumberland are this morning facing a wait of hours before discovering who will be their four MP's at Westminster for the next few years.

The electorate have had their say, the votes have been cast and the results decided - but it will not be until this afternoon that people in Berwick, Hexham, Wansbeck and Blyth Valley find out who they have chosen as their MPs.

Under new legislation passed at the end of the last Parliament, returning officers have been under pressure to conduct counts late last night, and ensure that the national result was known this morning.

However, county council officials decided to resist the move, pointing to the special 'challenges' posed in Northumberland - including the fact one polling station is on Holy Island, with its tide-affected causeway to the mainland. More than 246,000 people are eligible to vote in England's most northerly county, and feedback from the polling stations yesterday indicated a healthy turnout.
